Process Steps

After investigating all the possible facility plans, the school must identify one alternative as the best alternative. In order to determine the best alternative, the school should develop a set of criteria for judging. Criteria are specific to each situation but can include such factors as:

  • Cost
  • Total size of project
  • Ability to group functions or departments together
  • Effects on other departments or units
  • Use or reuse of existing space
  • Ease of implementation
  • Location
  • Impact on the site

The best alternative is likely to be a synthesis of several plans, using the best elements from each. Several versions, with subsequent revisions, should be anticipated in this process.
